WRITING PAPER

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A.    BACKGROUND
Of all the classes I took in college and graduate school, the two that have helped me most in my career have been English Composition and Business English. In these classes I learned effective writing skills, which I have used in every job I have ever had. No other job but my work on this site included writing as part of my job description. In spite of this, I was required to write in every job, and it was taken for granted that I would be able to do this. This is the case with most jobs -- whether you must write internal memos, correspond with clients, or help design sales materials. Writing beautiful prose and poetry is a talent. Writing effectively, however, is a skill that can be learned.

DISCUSSION

A.    WRITING DEFINITION
Writing skills are specific abilities which help writers put their thoughts into words in a meaningful form and to mentally interact with the message.

B.     KINDS OF WRITING
1.    One division of the kinds of writings is as follows:
- Expository Writing - where the writing serves to explain, inform
- Descriptive Writing - writing that serves to show, describe
- Narrative Writing - tells a story
- Persuasive Writing - arguing for or against an issue
- Creative Writing - interestingly, creative writing is a vague term, but it includes (while isn't limited to) fiction (across the genres), poetry, drama, screenwriting, autobiographies and more.

2.        Another way to divide the kinds of writing is from a target audience, or purpose point of view. So there can be:
- Academic writing - includes essays, research papers, reports and so on, each of them may use some of the modes listed above.
- Professional Writing - writing for academic or scientific journals, business reports, position papers, policy statements, and the likes, because these have to follow a standardized form.
- Business writing - includes technical writing, business plan writing, resume writing, letter writing etc.
- Copywriting - writing marketing text, grant writing
- Journalists, columnists, article writers (staff or freelance) - these writers write for newspapers and magazines either news articles, commentary or articles which focus on a certain subject
- Non-fiction book writers
- Fiction - novelists, screenwriters, playwrights, short stories writers, etc.
- Poets

C.     WRITING TIPS
1.      Use a structure
For some writers, having a structure in place first makes the writing easier. These writers prefer to think things out ahead of time and then build to a plan.
2.      Use strong verbs and nouns
The verbs are the action words. They put things in motion. Make yours as strong as possible.
3.      Be wary of adverbs and adjectives
If your verbs and nouns are strong, you can get rid of many adverbs or adjectives. Don't know what they are? They are the "describing words" your elementary school teachers told you to use to make your writing "more interesting."
4.      Use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar
use punctuation properly because it will affect the intonation and the meaning of the text.
such as the use of periods, question marks, etc.
5.       Use active voice
Technically, active voice puts the active agent first, followed by the verb (the action), followed by the object of the action.
Passive voice reverses the order.
- Active - The boy hit the ball.
- Passive - The ball was hit by the boy.
6.      Methods of delivery
If you're writing for strangers, make it shorter.
Use images and tone and design and interface to make your point. Teach people gradually.
If you're writing for colleagues, make it more robust.
Be specific. Be clear. Be intellectually rigorous and leave no wiggle room.
D.    WHY WRITING SKILLS IMPORTANT?
Writing skills help the learner gain independence, comprehensibility, fluency and creativity in writing. If learners have mastered these skills, they will be able to write so that not only they can read what they have written, but other speakers of that language can read and understand it.
